MySQL is the cross-platform open source database server software used extensively in web development and implementaion. MySQL was owned and sponsored by a single for-profit firm, the Swedish company MySQL AB, now a subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, which holds the copyright to most of the codebase. The project's source code is available under terms of the GNU General Public License, as well as under a variety of proprietary agreements.

PostgreSQL is an object-relational database management system based on POSTGRES. It is released under a BSD-style license and is thus free software. Its primary query language is Transact-SQL, an implementation of the ANSI/ISO standard Structured Query Language (SQL) used by both Microsoft and Sybase.
